Asia Houston Network hosted a holiday reception at Noche Cocina y Bar. The attendees included Mayor Lee Brown, Debra Duncan, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Southern News Group CEO Wea Lee, Rushlake Hotels President Terry Shaikh, Mariam Issa, C.C. Lee, KRIV General Manager & VP D’Artagnan Bebel, KRIV’s Lisa Whitlock, Ed Martin, Felix & Nellie Fraga, Regina Gibbons, Mark and Alice Lee, Houston Rockets' Audrey Cheng Trevino, John Kim, Henry Newinn, and HFD Union Spokesperson Roland Chavez.

Reception Welcoming Yao Ming

Asia Houston Network, along with various local organizations, cosponsored a reception officially welcoming Yao Ming to Houston. Mayor Lee P. Brown proclaimed December 11 “Yao Ming Day.” Yao Ming was joined by Mayor Lee P. Brown, Chinese Consul General Hu Yeshun, Houston Rockets President George Postolos, Helen Chang with the Mayor’s Office, and hundreds of fans and supporters. The event was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Reception Honoring Governor & Mrs. William P. Hobby

Asia Houston Network hosted a reception in honor of Governor and Mrs. William P. Hobby for their contributions to our city and state. The event took place on the stage of Sarofim Hall in the new Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The event chair was Mariam Issa.

Among 250 guests, special guests included:
Al Davis of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison's Office; City Council members Mark Goldberg, Michael Berry, and Gordon Quan; Former City councilmen Chris Bell and Felix Fraga; Chinese Consul General Yeshun Hu; John Chiang; Debra Duncan; Bud and Fran Franks; Gigi Huang; Makoto Kobara, president of Jetro (Japan External Trade Organization); Beth Wolff; Judge Pat Shelton, Judge Kent Ellis, Terry Shaikh, Ghulam Bombaywalla, Terry and Ann Cheng, Mark and Alice Lee, and Eugene Lee.

Seven restaurants graciously donated their food. They were: Angelika Cafe, Fu Kim Grand Palace, Hunan Downtown, La Sani, Korea Garden, Michaelangelo's, and Pappas Catering.


An Evening with John P. Lopez

Asia Houston Network hosted a reception featuring John P. Lopez, a Houston Chronicle Sports Columnist who covered the 2002 World Cup soccer games in Korea and Japan. The reception was held at Angelika Cafe in Bayou Place at 510 Texas. Special guests included John Kelley, Texas State Soccer Association President Bob Yampey, Korean Deputy Consul General Kun-Tae Lee, City Councilman Mark Goldberg and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President Richard Torres.

Asia Houston Network hosted a luncheon on Monday, May 13 at the Hyatt Regency honoring the contributions of local Asian women in the media. Special guests included Mayor Lee Brown, Former Mayor Bob and Elyse Lanier, Mayor pro-tem Gordon Quan, NASA Astronaut Rick Linnehan, Asian Press Club President Wea Lee, and Miguel San Juan, President of the World Trade Division of the Greater Houston Partnership.
