DIANE YOO WINS MISS ASIA USA Diane Yoo, Miss Korea-Texas 2006, won the Miss Asia Cultural Pageant. She also won Best in National Costume award. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the premiere pageant for young Asian women in the USA, the Miss Asia USA 2008 Cultural Pageant once again played to another sold out audience. HCC HONORS ASIAN COMMUNITY LEADERS In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, eight Asian-American community leaders are being honored with the Houston Community College Legacy Award. Ghulam Bombaywala, Glen Y. Gondo, Farah Khan, Dr. Rathna Kumar, Gigi Lee, Gordon Quan, Bapsi Sidhwa and Koshy Thomas were chosen for this recognition because of their involvement in the greater Houston area, their commitment to Houston’s Asian-American community and their contribution to the Houston area's status as an international and diverse city of opportunity. DANNY NGUYEN HONORED Danny Nguyen, president and co-founder of the Vietnamese American Houston Chamber of Commerce, was recently awarded an honorary degree from Houston Community College for his continuous contributions to the community. He is also president of Danny Nguyen International and a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM). Danny credits his strong determination to survive, succeed and ability to overcome adversity to his journey from Vietnam to America in search for freedom. Like many Vietnamese immigrants, Danny and his father risked their lives escaping from Vietnam, leaving his mother and five siblings behind. They were reunited 10 years later. Danny says, “There are so many opportunities in America right here in our city. It is up to us to figure out what we will do with them. RANDY SIM ELECTED TO SOUTHSIDE PLACE CITY COUNCIL Congratulations to Randy Sim! On May 10, Randy was elected to City Council, Position 2, in the City of Southside Place. This makes him the first Korean-American elected official in the Houston area. Randy is president of Satsun Corporation, a local commercial real estate management and development company, and vice president of the Airline Improvement District, a special management district in north Houston. Randy is also active in the community and devotes much of his time to numerous organizations. MAY IS NATIONAL ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution declaring the first Asian Pacific American Heritage Week as May 4-10, 1979. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long. THE YEAR OF THE RAT: Gung Hay Fat Choy! The Lunar New Year dates from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Lunar New Year, a large celebration for Vietnamese and Chinese residents, falls on Feb. 7 this year. The exact date shifts each year because the lunar calendar is based on cycles of the moon, rather than the sun, but it usually begins in late January or early February. If you were born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 - you were born under the sign of the rat. SINGAPORE AIRLINES TO BEGIN NEW PASSENGER SERVICE Singapore Airlines announced new passenger service to Moscow, Russia and Singapore. Starting on March 20, 2008, the airline will offer four weekly nonstop flights to Moscow from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) with continuing service to Singapore.
