WOMEN'S SELF-DEFENSE SEMINAR, Mind, Body & Spirit It's not about the size or strength, but attitude and skill. Asia Houston Network and Grandmaster Kim Soo of Kim Soo Karate will host Mind, Body & Spirit, a free women's self-defense seminar and demonstration. THERESA W. CHANG HONORED BY TEXAS EXECUTIVE WOMEN Theresa W. Chang was one of the "2005 Women on the Move®" honored today by the Texas Executive Women. Theresa served as a member of the UH System Board of Regents from 1997 to 2003. She serves on the Houston Grand Opera Board of Trustees and many other organizations. Theresa received a master's degree in natural gas and chemical engineering from Texas A&M University, and a law degree from South Texas College of Law. ASIAN-AMERICAN ELECTED OFFICIALS HONORED Houston-area Asian-American elected officials were honored at a luncheon held at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. All nine honorees attended and addressed the crowd. The guest speakers were state Senator John Whitmire and former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier. The Proceed from this event, $20,000.00, was presented to the University of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown, Houston Community College, and Texas Southern University. SUGIHARA: JAPANESE RIGHTEOUS GENTILE Holocaust Museum Houston hosted the exhibit of rare documents and artifacts telling the story of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who was responsible for saving the lives of thousands of Jews from the Nazis. An Asset for America's Future JP Morgan Chase, City of Houston and Center for Houston’s Future hosted a press conference and panel discussion on May 9, to announce the Cities in Transition: Asian Pacific Islander Americans ... An Asset for America's Future." The panel discussion featured James Calaway, Stephen Klineberg, City Councilman Gordon Quan, Ghulam Bombaywalla and Donna Cole. The panel discussed the importance of the APIA community to Houston and Houston's viability for the APIA community. The Cities in Transition, a major national conference and the first-ever of its kind in scope and importance, will be held at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston, September 21-23, 2005. MAY IS NATIONAL ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution declaring the first Asian Pacific American Heritage Week as May 4-10, 1979. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long. FORMER INS COMMISSIONER LEONEL CASTILLO HONORED A Man with Many Visions and One Purpose.... to Serve. Leonel Castillo, Senior Vice President of Asia Houston Network, was honored at a special tribute tonight at UH Hilton Hotel. The event was sponsored by Houston International University which he co-founded. Mr. Castillo served as Houston City Controller and Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) during President Jimmy Carter administration. DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE AFTERMATH OF '92 L.A. RIOTS OCA-Greater Houston hosted a free special screening of "Wet Sand," a film about the aftermath of the '92 L.A. riots, focused on the stories of the victims and witnesses leading to present conditions. Initially conceived as a sequel to SA-I-GU (April 29 in Korean), a video about the 1992 L.A. upheaval from the perspectives of Korean women, the documentary now consists of voices from African, Latino, Korean and White communities. posted 4/14/05 |

COUNCIL MEMBER M.J. KHAN HOSTS CRIME PREVENTION SUMMIT Council Member M.J. Khan hosted a crime prevention summit tonight at Houston Baptist University. He and Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt addressed crime prevention issues and listened to citizens' concerns about robberies, graffiti, drugs, gang violence and prostitution. M. J. FORMER MAYOR LEE P. BROWN HONORED: MURAL UNVEILED Community leaders today paid tribute to former mayor Lee P. Brown at an unveiling ceremony for the Houston in Harmony mural at the Lee P. Brown METRO Administration Building at 1900 Main. Dr. Brown served as mayor of Houston from 1998 to 2003. Before elected as mayor, he served as Public Safety Commissioner in Atlanta, Police Chief in Houston, Police Commissioner in N.Y. HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR! Year of the Rooster (year 4703) Lunar New Year, a large celebration for Vietnamese and Chinese residents, falls on Feb. 9 this year. The exact date shifts each year because the lunar calendar is based on cycles of the moon, rather than the sun, but it usually begins in late January or early February. Other Asian cultures, such as Japanese and Koreans, hold more elaborate celebrations on Jan. 1 rather than Lunar New Year, but many of the customs are the same. posted 2/09/05 |
